Dr Hewitt is the Medical Director of Operation Rainbow Australia. Each year Operation Rainbow sends surgical mission teams to perform Cleft lip and Palate Reconstructive Surgery in the Philippines.
Operation Rainbow has been sending volunteer Plastic Surgeons, Anaesthetists and Nurses on medical missions since 1986 to countries where craniofacial deformities are largely untreated. Operation Rainbow provides all medical personnel, equipment, medicines and support materials with local hospitals providing the operating theaters, support staff and recovery ward. This allows for each surgery to be performed at no cost to the children or their families. There is currently an estimated 80,000 children with cleft defects living in the Philippines today.
Dr Hewitt has been an active member of Operation Rainbow since 2005 and has worked in Quezon City Manila, Cebu and Cabanatuan provinces. As a director of Operation Rainbow he is involved in the planning stages of every mission and operates on at least one mission each year.
